Six European Parliament officials, and a Spanish senator, will be in Colombia until the end of January in order to investigate cases of human rights abuse.
The officials will meet with local social organizations, international agencies, Colombian government representatives and judicial officials from Bogota, Medellin and Cali, reports Caracol Radio.
One of the European Parliament representatives, Marian Suarez, announced on Monday that the international community is concerned about Colombian violations of the rights of women, trade unionists, and human rights activists.
The officials will collect testimony in order to compose and deliver a report to the European community.
The inquiry was called for by the Spanish chair for the EU, due to concerns over the Colombian government's attitude to human rights, following the murder of trade unionists, extrajudicial killings by the army, and baseless imprisonment of social leaders and human rights activists.
