Guerrillas use minor to blow up school

fortul, colombia, Arauca, farc

A young boy, recruited by guerillas, detonated explosives next to a school in the eastern Colombian department of Arauca on Thursday.

The boy placed explosives next to the only school in the town of Fortul, Arauca and, according to authorities, was captured by police minutes later. An investigation is underway to determine whether the attack was orchestrated by FARC or ELN guerrillas.

Police commander General Orlando Pineda said the bomb, consisting of a gas cylinder packed with explosives, was detonated by remote control and caused extensive damage to the school building and several nearby houses and shops.

Pineda confirmed that the boy was captured and is being interrogated by officials from the Colombian Family Welfare Institute, reported news station Caracol.
