Liberals call coalition with Polo inviable

Colombia news - Rafael Pardo

A coalition between Colombia's opposition parties Liberal Party and Polo Democratico in the face of the 2010 elections is "inviable," Liberal leader Rafael Pardo said Monday.

Pardo's announcement comes less than a week after his own proposal to Polo to form a "New Progressive Majority" that in the spring elections could take up the coalition of parties that support President Alvaro Uribe.

The Liberals continue to be in favor of such a coalition, but found a "lack of generosity" coming from Cambio Radical, a conservative party that is currently in the governing coalition, but opposes a re-election of President Alvaro Uribe.

Cambio Radical leader German Vargas Lleras had earlier already ruled out the possibility of joining a coalition with the leftist Polo Democratico.
