Noemi Sanin requests summit for presidential candidates

noemi sanin, presidente, elecciones 2010

Noemi Sanin, presidential candidate for Colombia's Conservative Party, on Tuesday called for a summit of all candidates running in the country's March 2010 elections.

According to former ambassador and presidential frontrunner Sanin, the summit should serve as an opportunity to lay down the rules for the upcoming elections because, in her opinion, there is currently a lack of structure.

"We do not know how the campaigns will be financed and we still know nothing of the guarantees," stated Sanin, and called "very politely" for a meeting of all candidates from every party in order to "settle an agreement regarding this issue."

Sanin's proposal was also aimed at President Alvaro Uribe himself to make an appearance at the meeting, reported newspaper El Espectador Tuesday.

The question was raised of whether the president should address the likelihood of his running in the presidential candidacy, in order to avoid violating the Law of Guarantees, and Sanin said "in fact he has already expressed that."

"The president is legally unable to comment because the steps have still not been processed through the Constitutional Court nor has the [re-election] referendum been accepted, but obviously what is needed is to set out a clear set of rules," Sanin concluded.
