Colombia's former defense minister announced Monday that the FARC guerrilla movement is suffering a financial crisis.
Former minister Juan Manuel Santos made the announcement following alleged intelligence reports revealed in a forthcoming book about Colombia's fight against the guerrillas.
According to Santos "there are certain disagreements between 'Mono Jojoy' and 'Alfonso Cano'." He explained that the cause of these disagreements may be differences in the agendas and ambitions of the two FARC movements.
Santos further stressed that "the theme of money" was also a contributing factor in the internal disputes within the FARC, reported newspaper El Espectador Monday.
The former Minister explained that both factions are in need of money, and so have begun to argue and to each question what the other is doing, giving rise to differences of opinion and disagreements over the financial structure of the organization.
According to Santos, this current difference between the two commanding factions of the FARC is nothing new and has been coming for a long time. He says that the struggle is between 'Cano', the intellectual branch, versus 'Jojoy', who controls the guerrillas' military endeavours - which has generated little understanding between the two.
On Tuesday, the release of Juan Manuel Santos' new book 'Jaque al terror' will allegedly shed new light on the supposed decline of the FARC.
