Second PG candidate steps down

Colombia news - Fiscalia Bogota

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe announced he will recompose the shortlist for a new Prosecutor General after the second of three candidates stepped down.

The Supreme Court, which is responsible for electing a new Prosecutor General from the President's shortlist, has so far neglected to make a choice amid criticism that none of the candidates have experience with penal law.

Virginia Uribe, the President's former attorney, resigned as a candidate following months of deadlock. Earlier, Juan Angel Palacio resigned after he was charged with bribery. He was replaced by former judge Marco Antonio Velilla.

According to Uribe's press secretary, the President will appoint a woman to fill the blank on the short list.

Colombia has been without a constitutionally elected Prosecutor General for five months as the Supreme Court claims Uribe's shortlist is unworkable, and Uribe refuses to give into criticism and replace the candidates.
