Church and Red Cross meet over hostage release operation

Colombia news - Moncayo

Representatives of the Catholic Church and the Red Cross met on Thursday to discuss the pending release of hostages held by the FARC. The Colombian government this week authorized the church to mediate directly with guerrilla leaders.

According to the church, the Red Cross is ready for any logistical operation leading to the release of two hostages the FARC promised to release six months ago.

The government's announcement earlier this week which allowed the Church and Red Cross to move forward broke months of stalemate in negotiations. Negotiations stalled because the government and the FARC were unable to reach a compromise on the terms of the hostage release.
