US expresses support for Colombian human rights NGOs

Colombia news - USAID

The U.S. ambassador to Bogota, William Brownfield, met with representatives of Colombian human rights organizations on Monday to express his country's support for their work, the embassy announced.

According to a press statement, the ambassador "recognized the importance of these organizations in the fundamental work to promote (human) rights in all the national territory as well as for the strengthening and legitimacy of the democracy."

Brownfield met with representatives of 36 organizations representing -- among others -- people displaced by war, the LGTB community, journalists and indigenous.

The reunion was organized by USAID, a federal program that according to the embassy has supported Colombian NGOs with some US$4 million since 2006.
