If referendum is finalized Registrar will denounce it as illegal

If the final decision of the presidential re-election referendum is consolidated, Registrar claimed Wednesday he will inform the Constitutional Court that it was conducted illegally.

Colombia's Registrar of Civil Status, Carlos Ariel Sanchez, said that if the judges' final decision regarding the re-election referendum of President Alvaro Uribe is finalized, he will report to the Constitutional Court that it was conducted outside the boundaries of the law.

Sanchez argued that from the outset he warned that the promoters of the controversial re-election initiative did not comply with the requirements set out by law and never issued a certificate, deciding instead to seek a ruling by the Electoral Council, reported news station Caracol.

During the processing of the referendum initiative through Congress, Sanchez maintained that in his opinion, the initiative did not meet legal presidential election requirements but his views were continuously rejected.

The re-election referendum is being undertaken to decide whether President Alvaro Uribe should be able to run for his third consecutive term in office, while Colombian law states that a president may not run for longer than one term.
