Supreme Court to try parapoliticians for crimes against humanity

corte suprema, colombia news, paramilitares

The Colombian Supreme Court will try politicians with paramilitary ties for crimes against humanity, W Radio reported Wednesday.

The Court established jurisprudence and will soon sentence politicians involved in parapolitics, not just for their involvement with paramilitaries but now also for their direct responsibility in crimes against humanity.

In Colombia, the Supreme Court has the ultimate authority over the prosecution and sentencing of national lawmakers and is currently involved in the investigation of dozens of politicians with alleged ties to right wing paramilitary death squads. Trying politicians for crimes against humanity means for example that they may now be tried for complicity in massacres committed by paramilitaries with whom they have ties.

Crimes against humanity include murder of protected people, torture, use of illicit methods of war, forced disappearance, acts of terrorism and acts of barbarism, according to W Radio.

Just one comment: it should be "national", not "federal lawmakers". Colombia has no federal structure.
