Despite security measures some 10 thousand people were injured during the November festivities in Colombia's Caribbean city of Cartagena.
Cartagena health authorities declared on Tuesday, at the end of a hectic few days of heavy partying, that during the revelry, music, drinking and fun around 10 thousand patients were referred to various medical centers throughout the city. Some of these centers were at times so overwhelmed that they virtually collapsed.
Luis Rangel, Director of the Administrative Dept of Disrict Health stated that the majority of injuries were attributed to fights, road traffic accidents, robberies and gunpowder use, reported news station Caracol on Tuesday.
"though the abuse of gunpowder is banned in this city, burns were reported - including an incident involving a three year old girl ... It is up to us to sue the parents of these children," asserted Rangel.
Bizarrely, authorities stated the majority of the injuries reported did not take place during the mass city-center events, as one might assume, where there were huge crowds of raving people. Instead they occured outside the center, amidst festivites organized across local suburban neighborhoods.

... Those suburban neighborhoods outside of the tourist zone have become very rough and dangerous. It is better to avoid leaving the tourist zone if at all possible. As far as huge crowds anywhere in Colombia, count me out. |
