Senate passes final referendum formalities

Senate

The Colombian Senate Wednesday approved the plenary session in which it voted on the re-election referendum bill, as a final formality that the Constitutional Court found had been overlooked.

This was the last step needed for the approval of the initiative.

In its first revision of the referendum bill, the Constitutional Court found that the House members forgot to give their final approval of the register of the December 17 session, in which the referendum initiative was voted on.

According to newspaper El Espectador, it is likely the representatives forgot to approve the session's register because they were very tired at the end of the long session which ended after 4:00 A.M.

The referendum will ask Colombians if they want a constitutional amendment that will allow presidents to run for three consecutive terms.

Th Constitutional Court is still testing the constitutionality of the bill, a process that may run into next year.
