Colombia signed an international space agency agreement with Argentina, France and Austria to allow them to monitor the Nevado del Huila volcano in southern Colombia by satellite imagery.

Satellite monitoring will provide images of the volcano's surface activity to allow the Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining (Ingeominas) to monitor for changes and make decisions about alert levels, EFE reported Wednesday.

Nevado de Huila has been on orange alert - meaning eruption probable in days of weeks-  for almost a month. the volcano had 1,195 seismic events between Novermber 4 and 10, according to Ingeominas.

The summit, at a height of 5,364m above sea level, is the highest in Colombia's Andean Central Cordillera and its crater is capped by ice.

Residents in the area were recommended to evacuate the vicinity.
