State Council evaluates proposal to create Ministry of Justice

colombia news, francisco ricaute, ministerio defensa

The State Council will evaluate a proposal to create a new Ministry of Justice, independent from the Ministry of the Interior which it currently shares a portfolio with.

The ex President of the Supreme Court Franciso Javier Ricaurte suggested the proposal as it would create a mediator between the executive and judicial branches of the State, El Espectador reported Friday.

President Alvaro Uribe's government and the country's Supreme Court have been at odds over the selection of a new Prosecutor General.

For over four months the Court has refused to pick a candidate from the presidential shortlist, saying it is unable to pick a capable Prosecutor General from the candidates.

Minister for the Interior and Justice Valencia Cossio told Tierra Friday that the division of his Ministry in two would not solve the dispute between the judiciary and the government. Such a division is not necessary as long as justice was adequately administered, Cossio added.
