US military pact is high treason: FARC

Colombia news - FARC logo

Colombia's largest rebel group, the FARC, rejects the recently signed military pact between the U.S. and Colombia, claiming President Alvaro Uribe committed high treason by giving up the country's sovereignty.

In a letter by the guerrillas' secretariat, the FARC insist the deal implies the construction of seven U.S. military bases on Colombian territory. Both the U.S. and Colombian government repeatedly denied this, caying the bases would remain under Colombian control.

"Hosting the territory as a base of agression against brother countries, against its own people and as a cornerstone of a strategy of continental domination, should fill the soul of Colombians with shame," the FARC writes.

The U.S. and Colombia say the bases will be used to support the Andean nation in its fight against rebel groups like the FARC and ELN, although the Americans will not take part in direct combat with illegal armed groups.

What was it called when part of Colombia was ceded to the FARC?

"...base of aggression against brother countries..." What are those FARC bases actually in other countries?
