Landslide kills two

lluvias, colombia news, weather

Two people were killed by a landslide triggered by heavy rains falling in central Colombia and some 250 families were also left homeless as a result, official sources stated on Tuesday.

According to a volunteer for the local Fire Department of the nearby town of Venadillo, a vehicle was swept away by the avalanche with two people inside, who were drowned.

The volunteer claimed that the driver managed to escape when the vehicle swept off the road but the two passengers did not get out in time and were killed, reported news site EFE.

Another four people traveling in a car were unharmed because they managed to escape from the avalanche of earth and stones that crashed down hillside as a result of being loosened by heavy rains in the area.

For his part, the mayor of Venadillo, Cesar Sanchez, said the rains have affected some 250 families and their town is currently inaccessible because the roads have been swept away.

Sanchez added that the waters of the Galapa creek flooded five neighborhoods of Venadillo.
