Uribe calls on unions to support trade agreements

alvaro uribe, colombia news

“Support trade agreements for Colombia with other countries as a formula to enable new global market alternatives,” President Alvaro Uribe asked to his country'slabor unions on Sunday.

Uribe claimed that these trade agreements would generate new quality employment throughout Colombia and not affect the stability of Colombians currently working, reported news site Dinero on Monday.

Uribe further said that trade agreements with other countries would allow Colombia to not depend so heavily on the markets of neighboring countries which are naturally affected when relations between the national governments of these countries come under starin.

"I much appreciated the support for trade agreements ... when there is a problem with the economy or government of a neighboring country then it affects our jobs, thus we need to have many trade agreements," emphasized the President.

"It is so that Colombians have opportunities ... the first marker required for a democracy or trade treaty is to ensure quality of employment, social security affiliation and respect of worker's rights," he added.

Finally Uribe concluded by saying that he urged workers to help Colombia attain numerous trade agreements in order to have any serious chance of reaching competitive economic markets.
