FARC attack on Toribio leaves six civilians wounded

Colombia news - Toribio violence

A FARC guerrilla attack on the south western Colombian town of Toribio on Saturday left six people wounded, including a three year old boy, reported media on Monday.

Authorities state that the security situation in the town of Toribio, located in the department of Cauca, is deeply concerning. The guerrillas continue to harass the Police and Army forces from buildings scattered through the urban center thus constantly endangering the civil population.

Toribio has allegedly been attacked by guerrillas some 52 times this year alone.

For the governor of Cauca, Guillermo Alberto Gonzalez, the attack this weekend was a clear violation of human rights against a defenseless population, reported news site La FM on Monday.

"There is a child now on the verge of death, because the guerrillas detonated a grenade in the town square, where local people where celebrating Chlidren's Day," claimed Gonzalez.

The six wounded civilians, including the three year old who was injured by shrapnel, were rushed to hospital in the nearby city of Cali. The child and his mother remain in a critial state.

The population of Toribio have requested that the Colombian Government provide elevated security throughout the Cauca region.
