AH1N1 death toll reaches 131

Colombia news - swine flu

The death toll for the AH1N1 swine flu virus has risen to 131 in Colombia, claiming the lives of another 13 people this past week, stated the Ministry of Social Welfare on Tuesday.

Up until October 27, health authorities claim that the number of confirmed cases of the virus has reached 2,660 across 31 of Colombia's 32 departments.

The Colombian Minister for Social Protection recalled that in order to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, it was necessary to have monitoring systems able detect the presence of the AH1N1 virus set up in health centers throughout the country.

The first case of the virus to occur in Colombia was detected on May 3 and the first death occurred on June 4, a woman aged 23, in the country's capital, Bogota.
