Earthquake measuring 5.5 shakes Colombia

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook Colombia on Tuesday, with its epicenter twenty miles south of Bucaramanga, Santander and a profundity of 143 kilometers.

Deputy director of the Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining (Inegominas), Marta Calvache, reported that the earthquake rocked a large part of northern Colombia, while other authorities have not yet reported any casualties or damage, reported newspaper El Espectador.

The epicenter of the earthquake was pinpointed at the edge of the eastern Andean range in the town of La Mesa de los Santos, in the Santander department.

The tremor was felt in the departments of Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Santander, Norte de Santander, Risaralda, Caldas, Antioquia, Boyaca, and some of the northern coast of Colombia, and was recorded at 11:26 local time.

Relief agencies conducted an inspection in all areas where the quake was felt to establish whether there were any casualties or damage.

On October 22 another earthquake of 4.7 struck the same area with no reported no fatalities or property damage. Its epicenter was also 5.9 kilometers from La Mesa de los Santos.
