Colombia asks Venezuela for proof of espionage

DAS

Colombia asked Venezuela for proof of its accusation of espionage allegedly led by the Colombian Department of Administrative Security (DAS).

The Colombian ambassador in Caracas, Maria Luisa Chiappe said that the protest letter she received from Venezuelan authorities Monday contained "no proof whatsoever" of the alleged espionage.

Chiappe said "we have no knowledge of DAS agents in this country, apart from an agent detained on September 26 in Maracaibo," Caracol Radio reported.

The Colombian diplomat requested proof from the Venezuelan government of its claims.

According to the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, documents were seized that "refer to a grand scheme of conspiracy and destabilization against Venezuela," Caracol Radio reported Monday.

Diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Colombia broke down following Colombia's announcement that it will allow seven U.S. military bases on its soil.
