FARC kill five, wound nine soldiers

Colombia news - army

Guerrillas of the FARC killed five and wounded nine Colombian soldiers in the south of Colombia, the army announced Sunday.

According to an army spokesman, the soldiers were ambushed in the jungle around Calamar, Guaviare where they were to protect civilians involved in the eradication of coca fields.

"The terrorists, utilizing (gas) cylinders packed with explosives in an indiscriminate manner, murdered the soldiers who were supporting the eradication work," the army said.

The Colombian government is trying to manually eradicate thousands of hectare of coca, the plan used to produce cocaine. The FARC and other illegal armed groups in Colombia are financially dependent of the drug production and trade.
