Clashes on the Colombia - Venezuela border

frontera, disturbios, colombia news

Some 300 motorcyclists confronted Venezuelan guards on Thursday over two international bridges crossing the border of Colombia and Venezuela, in protest against the prohibition of transporting goods between the two countries.

Protestors burned tires and created bonfires along the roads leading to the two bridges where barricades had been constructed and protestors were throwing stones while the Venezuelan guards fired tear gas into the angry crowds, reported Colombian media on Thursday.

Manifestation and controversy has arisen consistenly since Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez ordered that the passage of all food goods and fuel between the two countries be prohibited along the entire 2,219 kilometer border.

Venezuela froze diplomatic relations with Colombia in July following Colombia's announcement that it was considering the possibility of openning seven of its airbases to U.S. military personnel.
