Over 15,000 students take to Bogota streets

Thousands of students marched through the main streets of Colombia's capital Bogota Tuesday to demand a decent budget for their universities and guarantees that their institutions will not collapse.

News source CMI reported that the president of the National Federation of Student Representatives, Carlos Amaya, said he will go as far as he had to to ensure that Congress approves a provision of resources to address the needs of universities across the country.

"Today when Congress approves the university budget we want [our viewpoint] to be taken into account so that our institutions do not suffer the rigors of the financial crisis that they have already [weathered]," Amaya said.

The students are currently concentrated in the Plaza Bolivar where they are haranguing the national government, demanding to be heard.

In addition, four representatives of the universities are in the budget committee, which will evaluate the amount that the nation's public universities will receive.
