Coca growers to receive US aid

Colombia news - Cocoa

Coca growers in the central Colombian department of Cundinamarca will receive U.S. financial support to switch to cultivating cocoa.

Governor Andres Gonzalez Diaz announced the project after meeting with U.S. ambassador to Bogota, William Brownfield on Monday.

The Americans will provide financial and technical aid for projects that focus on subsidizing the farmers' crop switch from coca to cocoa.

With the help of the Americans and departmental and state agencies "we can improve the income of nearly 5,000 families," Gonzalez told local radio station Santa Fe.

Cundinamarca is the department that encloses the Bogota Federal District.
