22 students were arrested on the National University campus in Bogota Friday after they had detained the university rector for five hours during a demonstration.
Some 300 students were protesting the lack of funds of the public university. During this protest, the university rector, who wanted to leave campus, was surrounded by students and wasn't allowed to leave.
After President Alvaro Uribe ordered anti-riot police to enter the campus, the 22 suspects were arrested. Seven of them were released for being minors.
Uribe called on prosecutors and judges to seek a conviction for kidnapping for the students.

... What have we learned if we have NOT learned how to treat each other! Freedom of expression is NOT license to step on the rights of others or destroy private property or commit or promote acts of violence. Justice is NOT built on injustice or oppression, but respect and protection for the rights of others, especially if they do NOT agree with you. The respect of others views ensures own rights. Consequently absolutely every citizen is entitled to equal protection under the law and is therefor also subject to the law, students are no exception. Would one NOT think that having having a university education there would be even more accountability? Has it not be said “To whom much is given much is expected”? Being truly educated verses just attending a university, is speaking to my brother's heart, not afflicting him with the language of violence, as if no more then a wild animal. |
