Peace in Colombia is impossible at the moment because of the current country's government policy, opposition Senator Piedad Cordoba said Sunday.
According to the Liberal Party politician, a "peace process is impossible in the country now, because it's a political decision of the government" of President Alvaro Uribe.
The Senator also blamed the government for the ongoing delay of a deal between government and FARC that could result in the release of more hostages held by guerrillas.
Cordoba, a supporter of a "humanitarian exchange" of soldiers held in the jungle for guerrillas held in Colombian prisons, said that she and other mediators are "waiting for the government to say what the next step is to move on" with the promised release of two soldiers the FARC in May promised to release.
The FARC promised to release the hostages, but demand the government commits to the prisoner before more hostages will be released. The Uribe administraton has always opposed this prisoner swap and demands the FARC to unilaterally release hostages.

... I hope that the government has a lot of things to give to the FARC. Once the giving starts, all the FARC has to do is take a few more whenever they need anything. Piedad for President!! |

... It's a familiar terrorist tactic the world over. "If you don't accede to my demands then YOU are responsible for everything I do." No government policy could satisfy FARC's aspirations for money and power, as neither is in the gift of the President. The money comes from a criminal trade while, in a democracy, power is in the hands of the people. Cordoba's suggestion that it is the elected government, rather than the terrorists, that is responsible for the present suffering is not only risible - it is obscene! |
