Liberal Party asks court to suspend study of re-election referendum

Colombia news - referendum

Colombia's Liberal Party representative Guillermo Rivera will ask the Constitutional Court to suspend their review of the re-election referendum bill.

According to Rivera, the State Council is still considering a lawsuit brought by an individual against the decree, regarding the convening of an extraordinary session in which the proposed referendum was adopted in the second reading, reports daily El Tiempo.

"This situation warrants the suspension of the study requested under the figure of the ruling," said Rivera.

The House of Representatives passed the re-election referendum on the second reading on 17 December 2008, after a decree was issued to convene a special meeting for that purpose.

Members of the opposition have criticized the convention of the second meeting, submitting that the decree was irregular.
