Supreme Court to meet Uribe regarding Prosecutor General post

suprema corte, colombia news

President Alvaro Uribe will meet with members of the Supreme Court to try to convince them to rescind their rejection of his nominated Prosecutor General shortlist.

Uribe's government seeks to convince members of the judiciary that the list of candidates that he proposed for the post of Prosecutor General of Colombia are suitable, after the Supreme Court deemed the selection of any of them "unfeasible."

According to President Uribe, the prolonged period of time engendered by the stand-off has been generating a climate of impunity and is favoring organized crime, making the appointment of the new Prosecutor General imperative, newspaper El Espectador reports.

The president has repeatedly affirmed that the list is acceptable and that all three shortlisted candidates are more than capable of filling the post, despite repeated objections by the Supreme Court.

In the course of a meeting of the 23 judges, the Court decided once again to abstain from electing a candidate from the shortlist.

President of the Supreme Court, Augusto Ibañez, said that although the issue would be discussed again at the Chamber on Thursday, the Court would retain its initial position of the unviability of the candidates.

According to Ibañez's previous comments, the Court would be open to dialogue in order to open new paths and hear respective proposals of the election process, but would maintain an unwavering stance against the three proposed candidates.
