Colombia to receive OAS Presidency

oas, colombia news

Colombia will receive the rotating presidency for the Organization of American States on Friday amid a period of heightened tensions amongst various regions of the OAS.

According to newspaper El Tiempo, the current Colombian Ambassador, Luis Alfonso Hoyos, will take up the position at a time when OAS inter-country relations are somewhat tense.

Hoyos will be expected to lead discussion and cooperation in the Council and serve as a bridge between countries that are currently experiencing strained relations.

Colombian media speculate that the situation in Honduras will be a priority subject and there are concerns that Hoyos could be put in an awkward position with regard opposition to Colombia's new military agreement with the United States as well as the current, fragile relationship between Colombia and Ecuador.
