Colombian Supreme Court to meet with US Secretary of State

hilary clinton, augusto ibañes, colombia news

The Colombian Supreme Court is preparing to hold a meeting with the US Secretary of State in order to discuss pressing issues with a view to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Although precise criteria for the meeting has not been openly disclosed, newspaper El Espectador announced in a report on Wednesday, some of its hunches.

Six high court magistrates will travel to the United States Friday for the meeting with Clinton's administrative personel, though Clinton has announced that she is unsure as to whether she herself will be present at the assembly.

According to the newspaper, among the primary topics to be discussed will be the chaotic scandal surrounding the illegal tracking and interception of communications of almost all of Colombia's Supreme Court magistrates by the Colombian Department of Administrative Security (DAS).

This particular matter has been raging for several weeks to such an extent that President Alvaro Uribe made the decision to restructure the entire colombian intelligence department. The scandal has resulted in legal action being taken against more than 30 officials and is of paramount concern to the U.S Government as it involved the illegal tracking of a U.S. embassy official in Colombia.

Another subject to be addressed is the issue of the extradition of Colombians to the U.S.

Recent cases will be discussed, such as that of FARC guard Alexander Farfan, who is imprisoned in Colombia for the kidnapping of three americans as well as that of former David Murcia Guzman partner, David Angel, whose extradition was denied by colombian courts in September.

Lastly, colombian media are speculating that the meeting will focus greatly on the reinforcement of relations with China as well as new developments in trials against politicians with alleged paramilitary ties.
