Bill filed for consecutive re-election of governors and mayors

The Colombian government has filed before Congress a motion regarding the consecutive re-election of governors and mayors up to three times.

Congress will be looking into the proposal over the next few days, reports news source CMI.

Minister for the Interior and Justice, Fabio Valencia, said that the initiative is not intended to make way for a third re-election of President Álvaro Uribe, but rather is looking to give democratic guarantees to regional leaders.

Valencia said the project is supported by organizations composed of regional leaders, and that he hoped that before finishing the current legislature, that mayors and governors of Colombia would have an opportunity to be re-elected for up to three consecutive terms.
