IG asks Supreme Court to nullify parapolitics cases

Colombia news - Alejandro Ordonez

Colombia's Inspector General, Alejandro Ordoñez, announced Monday he will ask the Supreme Court to nullify the cases against parapoliticans who have resigned from Congress over paramilitary charges.

According to Ordoñez, the Colombian law does not include aggravated conspiracy in the list of prosecutable offenses by lawmakers.

The nullification would benefit former lawmakers who resigned from Congress in order to avoid prosecution by the Supreme Court. In Colombia, lawmakers are prosecuted by the Supreme Court, whose rulings do not admit appeals. When they resigned, Congress people are prosecuted by the Prosecutor General's Office.

Recently, the Supreme Court ruled that the cases of resigned lawmakers will be dealt with by the high court itself.

Dozens of Congressmen are investigated for their alleged paramilitary ties.
