Authorities investigate three more indigenous murders in southern Colombia

Colombia news - Nariño

Authorities on Monday began investigating the murder of three Awa indigenous community in the southern Colombian department of Nariño.

The victims were murdered this weekend in the rural area outside the coastal city of Tumaco. Their murder led to the displacement of 200 tribe members who feared for their lives.

The authorities say to have no clue of who is guilty of the murders as none of the victims had been threatened by any of the illegal armed groups in the region.

Nariño, the department bordering Ecuador in the south and the Pacific ocean, has seen many murders and massacres over the years committed either by leftist guerrillas, right wing paramilitaries or the mafia. The native Awa have been victims to deadly violence several times this year already.
