FARC turn to bank robbery

Colombia news - bank robbery

Assumed guerrillas of the FARC robbed a local bank in an attack on a village in the south east of Colombia Tuesday, reported Canal Caracol.

According to the television station, the rebels entered the village of Caloto, Cauca early in the morning, attacking the local police station and buildings close to it to then activate a number of explosives on the outside of the bank.

The guerrillas were able to enter the local offica of the Banco Agrario, but didn't succeed in opening the main safe inside the bank, a local police commander told Caracol.

A second safe was forced and the rebels were able to leave the town with one million pesos (US$500) worth of change, representatives of the bank said.

Inhabitants, who had been spared from rebel attacks for four years, said they were "very scared, very worried and very sad about what happened."

Nobody was injured in the attack that left great material damage to the village.
