House president abandons coalition, joins Liberal Party

Colombia news - Edgar Gomez

The president of Colombia's House of Representatives, Edgar Gomez, left coalition party Convergencia Ciudadana on Wednesday to join the opposition Liberal Party.

The switch is a big setback for the governing coalition who, because of this transfer, now lose the presidency over the House.

Gomez takes advantage of a recently implemented law that allows congressmen to switch party during their elected term. The law has been used a number of times by members of Cambio Radical, who, in disagreement with their party's opposition to the re-election referendum, joined fellow coalition member, Partido de la U.
