Barranquilla's Mayor faces jail sentence

Colombia news - Alex Char

Barranquilla Mayor Alex Char and three members of his cabinet will face 10-day imprisonment for failing to obey a judge's ruling.

The arrest warrant was issued by the sixth municipal penal judge of Barranquilla against Alex Char, his department of urban development  manager Nicolas Renowitzky, and the city's secretary of urban control and public space.

In February 2008, seven stationary vendors filed a writ of protection to nullify an ordinace that ruled their eviction from the sidewalks at the commercial area of San Andresito.

The sixth municipal penal judge of Barranquilla refused in two rulings to grant the vendor's petition.

The petitioners challenged the judge's decision before a circuit penal judge who ordered that  the city gave the vendors a new place to work. The judicial ruling was to be complied within three months.

In January 2009 the vendor filed a contempt notice because the government officials had passed the deadline without compliance.

The press office of Barranquilla mayor said they have not received any notice on judge's decision.
