US to invest at least US$511 million in Plan Colombia in 2010

Colombia news - William Brownfield

The United States will invest in between 511 and 530 million dollars in Plan Colombia next year, U.S. ambassador to Bogota, William Brownfield, told reporters Tuesday.

According to the ambassador, U.S. Congress is "debating some numbers, some aid budgets between 511 million and 530 million dollars. This is quite a lot (...) and suggests that neither Congress nor the government of the United States have the least intention of abandoning [Plan Colombia].

According to news station CM&, the budget is smaller than previous years. Plan Colombia received US$541 million in 2008 and US$540 million in 2009.

Colombia feared a reduction of U.S. aid for Plan Colombia as teh Colombian military received increasing criticism on its human rights records and teh Obama administration was forced to reconsider budgets because of the recession the U.S. found itself in.
