Bomb blast kills 3 in southern Colombia

Colombia news - San Vicente del Caguan

Authorities say a bomb blast has killed a woman and two children and seriously wounded three more civilians in a southern town near the traditional stronghold of Colombia's main leftist rebel group.

The acting mayor of San Vicente del Caguan, Arcenio Novoa, says the bomb exploded Tuesday in the town's central square. He says it appeared directed at a police patrol.

Novoa said the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, were suspected.

San Vicente, located in the southern Caqueta department, hosted failed peace talks from 1998-2002 between the FARC and the government of then-President Andres Pastrana.

Pastrana had demilitarized a Switzerland-sized swath of territory to facilitate the talks, which fell apart in large part because the rebels continued to kidnap and run drug. (AP)
