Displaced to leave central Bogota square

Colombia news - Tercer Milenio

The nearly 2,000 displaced who had been occupying the Parque Tercer Milenio in the center of Bogota for four months, agreed to end the occupation late Thursday.

According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the displaced and the mayor signed an agreement wherein the city of Bogota promised to deliver humanitarian aid and to earmark funds for labor projects for the refugees and the refugees agreed to end the occupation of the central square.

The refugees agreed to leave the square Sunday.

The displaced occupied the square, while Bogota and the national government were fighting over who was responsible over the care of the refugees of Colombia's violent conflict.

According to UN figures, Colombia has over 3 million displaced. NGOs estimate an even higher number of 4 million.
