Court lets assistant PG assume top position

Colombia news - Guillermo Mendoza

Colombia's Supreme Court will let assistant Prosecutor General Guillermo Mendoza Diago replace departing PG Mario Iguaran, while the Court and Presidency work out a successor.

The Court explicitly decided not to name Mendoza Diago as interim PG, because, according to the country's highest judicial body, the assistant PG automatically assumes the position of his boss during times of absence.

The Court and the Presidency so far have been unable to work out a successor for Iguarán, who's last day in office is Thursday.

President Uribe gave the Court a shortlist of three candidates, but the court has been reluctant to elect any of the candidates.

The President's choice was criticized by experts, because none of the candidates have any experience in penal law. One of the candidates is accused of bribery when he was a member of the country's State Council.

According to local media, the Court is likely to ask the President to come up with candidates it finds more. However, none of the court's magistrates have publicly spoken out about this possibility.
