Bogota residents collect signatures to remove mayor

Colombia news - Amo Bogota

A group of people from Bogota started the collecting of signatures needed to see the mayor of the capital of Colombia, Samuel Moreno, removed from office.

The goal of the nine young people is to present 500 thousand signatures, demanding the removal of the mayor, to the National Registry. If the Registry approves 367 thousand of these signatures, a binding referendum on the removal of the mayor can be called.

One of the organizers of the project, Andres Hernandez, told Caracol Radio the purpose of the initiative is toexpress the feelings of 77 percent of the city's residents who, according to polls, disapprove of their mayor's policy.

To be able to actually remove the mayor from office, 1.3 million of the approximately 8 million bogotanos will have to vote against the mayor in the referendum. More than half of the city's residents will have to take part in the popular vote.
