Hostages' proof of life expected next week: Cordoba

Colombia news - Piedad Cordoba

Colombian opposition Senator Piedad Cordoba said Wednesday that within a week she expects to have proof of life of members of the security forces currently held captive by the country's largest rebel group FARC.

The 24 are considered "interchangeable" and are part of a FARC proposal to swap for some 500 guerrillas imprisoned in Colombian and U.S. jails.

"We are waiting for proofs of lifeto arrive in less than a week," the Senator said at a forum on reconciliation at Bogota's National University where she spoke.

"I know it is on its way and the most certain is that the families of those held captive will have the evidence the coming week," the Senator said, adding she hoped tobe receiving proof of life of all 24 who are held in the jungle.

The FARC recently offered to release two of the "interchangeable" hostages, but says the other 22 will only be released as part of a prisoner swap or "humanitarian deal." The rebels are suspected of holding a few hundred civilians hostage for extortion purposes.
