PG warrants first arrest in DAS wiretaps case

Colombia news - DAS

Colombia's Prosecutor General warranted the arrest of a former intelligence director of the country's intelligence agency DAS.

Former intelligence director Enrique Alberto Ariza Rivas worked for the DAS and close to former DAS director Jorge Noguera, who is accused of having started the alleged illegal practice of the country's "secret police."

Arivas, currently abroad, is suspected of having been the link between Noguera and the DAS' G3 unit that is suspected of being in charge of the carrying out of wiretaps. According to newspaper El Espectador, the official never showed up for any of the PG's interrogations and because of this is now ordered to be arrested.

The Prosecutor General's Office is investigating accusations that the DAS was involved in the illegal wiretapping of Supreme Court judges, journalists and opposition politicians. Among those investigated are three former DAS directors and aides of President Alvaro Uribe.
