Cordoba hopes US will encourage peace dialogue

Piedad Cordoba

Senator Piedad Cordoba, who mediates the release of FARC hostages, hopes that the United States will encourage the peace dialogue in Colombia.

According to Cordoba, the United States play an important role in the peace dialogue with the FARC and ELN and in the Colombian war because of Plan Colombia "which has not proved successful and, above all, they have been the subject of the war."

"We hope that the Obama administration presents a more favourable scenario for a comprehensive political dialogue with the guerrillas," the senator told local media.

Cordoba also thinks it is important to "build a bilateral judicial cooperation system" for the extradited paramilitaries to the U.S. "to ensure the process of thruth, justice and peace in Colombia."

It is important, Cordoba pointed out, to learn the truth to build an authentic democracy.

Last week President Alvaro Uribe authorized 'Colombians for Peace' leader Cordoba to participate in negotiations to free 24 FARC hostages.
