Inspector General investigates notary scandal

Colombia news - Alejandro Ordonez

Colombia's Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez Wednesday announced he is starting an investigation into the alleged bribery of Congressmen to approve the 2006 re-election of President Alvaro Uribe.

The Inspector General's Office will investigate accusations that the government gave notary offices in return of a vote in favor of a constitutional change needed for Uribe to be allowed a re-election. The Prosecutor general already started a criminal investigation of the accusations.

Ordoñez Wednesday announced he assigned an investigator to see if any government officials should be disciplinarily punished for the alleged bribery.

According to the former superintendent of notaries, a total of 34 lawmakers who voted in favor of the bill were appointed a notary office afterward.
