Uruguay grants political asylum to DMG director's wife: lawyer

Colombia news - Murcia family

Uruguay Tuesday granted political asylum to Johana Ivette Leon Bermudez, the wife of DMG director David Murcia and wanted by Colombia for alleged money laundering and illicit enrichment, her lawyer said Wednesday.

According to the attorney, Leon Bermudez is now allowed to move freely within the country, receives a special passport and work permit.

Murcia's wife was arrested in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo in January after Colombia requested her extradition. Authorities in the south American country then denied the request and released Leon Bermudez.

According to the lawyer of the Guzman family, the asylum was granted because of the political persecution of the DMG executives.

DMG is accused by Colombian authorities of having laundered drug money and being a ponzi scheme. Murcia is currently on trial in Colombia on money laundering and illicit enrichment charges.

The shutdown of Murcia's company defrauded hundreds of thousands of Colombians, who had invested their savings in the company.
