Enough evidence to prove paramilitary ties of President's cousin: IG

Colombia news - Mario Uribe

Colombia's Inspector General called on the Prosecutor General to call Mario Uribe, former Senator and cousin and close ally of President Alvaro Uribe, to trial for his alleged links with paramilitary organization AUC.

According to the IG's Office, there is enough evidence to prove that Uribe met with extradited AUC commander Salvatore Mancuso on several occasions.

The Prosecutor General's Office has ended its investigation against the former Senator and is now considering the evidence to see if it has enough to take the President's cousin to court.

Uribe was originally arrested on 'parapolitics' charges in April 2008, but was released from prison in August.
