US Congress to discuss FTA when Colombia fulfills requirements: Kirk

When Colombia meets the environmental and labor requirements set by U.S. president Obama, the Free Trade Agreement with the United States will be taken to Congress, the country's Trade Representative Ron Kirk said Wednesday.

According to Kirk, Congress will discuss pending trade agreements only when they reflect their values in labor laws and in the environment.

"We will put it forward when [the Colombia government] meets all criterion which the president set [...] so that the FTA reflects our values about employment and environment", Kirk said.

The official made this statement after a meeting with some Democratic Congressmen who are skeptical whether the United States really need trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.
