Coast guard seizes 200 tons of cocaine

Colombia news - Coast guard

Colombian authorities have seized two tons of cocaine after chasing down a speedboat apparently bound for Central America, an official said.

The drugs were sealed in 70 packets in the boat as it sped across the Gulf of Uraba off Colombia's Caribbean coast.

The vessel was tracked and eventually intercepted by the Colombian coast guard, Colombia's navy announced.

Taken by surprise, the crew attacked the Coast Guard unit, beached the speed boat near the town of Necocli, and fled, the navy said.

More than 100 tons of cocaine have been seized since the beginning of the year in Colombia.

The country remains the world's largest cocaine producer, with an estimated 430 tons produced in 2008, much of it destined for the United States, according to the United Nations. (AFP)
